 Wendy's Comments:
At the beginning of 1986 I made a commitment that I was going to write. I experimented with lots of different genres during the year, and in October read of a competition run by Ashton Scholastic for a picture book text. It was the first time I'd realised that a picture book text could be presented without illustrations - what joy! I wrote Amanda's Dinosaur, which shared the first prize and was published in July 1988.
As a first time author, I was exceptionally lucky to have illustrations that I absolutely loved. Seeing the pictures for the first time was a little like seeing photos of forgotten moments of childhood, as it rounded out the elements of the story and pointed out that a picture book is as much the creation of the artist as the author.
