Jack Henry and Finn up for award

Jack Henry from Spook's Shack wants me to tell you that Spook's Shack has been shortlisted for the The West Australian Young Readers' Book Award. Finn's excited about it too but was too shy to say so - Jack Henry says that one advantage of being a ghost is that you can be as bossy and as conceited as you like.

Okay, I know Jack Henry and Finn aren't real, but they were my imaginary friends for so long while I was writing the book, that I've been imagining how they'd react. It's always very special being a finalist for any award, but it's especially good to know that kids voted for it - because they're the readers I wrote it for!

Apart from that, January's been a quietly busy month with family and friends, lots of emails and thinking time about the Nim's Island movie script and then going back to work on the Mosaic Mermaid, the adult novel that's been feeling very neglected for the last few months. I've also just added some suggestions for teachers for Spook's Shack and Ark in the Park. If you've had some good ideas for activities or discussions when teaching any of my books, why not drop me a line and tell me about them? Naturally, unless you prefer to remain anonymous, you'll be credited with any I use.

Now it's February, Groundhog Day in North America and the start of the new school year here in Australia... hope it's a good one for everyone!

  happy reading
