Seeing my story through another's eyes
The kookaburras have been busy laughing since early this morning; perhaps
they know that the proof copy of Spook's Shack is waiting for me to reread before it's all put together into the final text with Kerry Millard's
illustrations. She's been emailing the pictures as she finishes them, which
is quite exciting. The bad guy looks SO horrible! It's also very interesting
for me to see how closely she reads what I've written, and then how she
interprets it. Her drawings always add something to what I've described, as
if she's seeing the scene from a different angle. I love this, because the
reader is already seeing it through my eyes, or my words, so it's fun to be
able to see it a slightly different way.
Of course it's especially fun for me because Kerry gets so enthusiastic
about what she's doing that she often phones me, and by the time we've
chatted about it, I usually learn something new about what I've written!
This month, apart from the proof-reading, I'll be concentrating on a short
story for "Kids' Night In". Lots of different writers and artists are
contributing to this book, which will be sold to benefit the War Child
charity.
And if there's time left over, I'll get back to the new novel!
