Teachers' Resources: Poppy's Path
And from Tadpoles Teacher's Notes by Denise Gourlay. (For the complete set please contact Koala Books.)
1. Beautiful, lyrical prose is often found in Wendy Orr's work, and Poppy's Path is no exception. In a tale reminiscent of many folktales, we follow Poppy's physical and emotional journeys to find what she wants in life... There is a lot to talk about here, from the notion of self-discovery to the nature of storytelling.
2. Discuss Poppy's reasons for leaving home.... Do the children know what they want to be when they grow up?
3. Talk about the sort of world that Poppy lives in. Is it the same as our world?
4. Talk about the statement in the epilogue - "a story isn't finished till it's shared". What could this mean?
5. Get the children to paint either Poppy's village or the Absolutely Amazing Department Store.
6. Divide the children into pairs. One will be Poppy and the other one of her baby animals. Poppy has to teach, in turn, the giraffe, monkey and lion how to play appropriately. Then reverse the roles.
