Teachers' Resources: Sally's Painting Room
From Tadpoles Teacher's Notes by Denise Gourlay. (For the complete set please contact Koala Books.)
1. The cat's antics form an amusing visual sub-text, and in some cases, a commentary on the narrative text.
What happens to this striped cat?
How is its "story" told?
2. What do the children think about how the other members of the family interrupted Sally to ask her to help them? What do they think Sally's feelings were about these events?
3. "The paintings inside Sally crowded and pushed and came out like tears." Discuss whether the children have ever felt angry or sad when they have been prevented from making something, or been interrupted in the middle of writing or drawing. Why?
4. Colours influence our emotions in different ways. Have the children collect pictures or photographs from magazines which feature a single colour. As a class, discuss how these illustrations make the children feel. What impact do various colours have? What feelings do we associate with red? Black? Green? Blue?
